Improving Access to Appointments

We are making some changes to the way we use our appointment system to help improve access to Primary Care and reduce waiting times for routine appointments.

Introduction

Over recent months, increasing demand for appointments has resulted in longer waits for non-urgent care. We recognise that this can be frustrating for patients and can make it more difficult for people to receive care when they need it.

To address this, we are adapting our appointment processes to ensure that appointments are used in the most effective way possible and that patients receive the right care, at the right time, from the right clinician.

What is changing?

  • Increasing the number of appointments available for patients with urgent health concerns.
  • Simplifying appointment booking processes to make access easier and more efficient.
  • Enhancing clinical triage to ensure patients are directed to the most appropriate service or healthcare professional.
  • Expanding the use of text messaging and electronic communications where appropriate, reducing the need for unnecessary appointments.
  • Making greater use of our multidisciplinary team, including our Pharmacy Team and other healthcare professionals, who can provide expert support for many patient needs.
  • Encouraging patients to use Anima for non-urgent requests, helping us assess needs and prioritise care more effectively.

What does this mean for patients?

Our aim is to:

  • Reduce waiting times for routine appointments.
  • Improve access to same-day and urgent care when needed.
  • Ensure appointments are available for patients who genuinely require them.
  • Provide a safer, more efficient service for everyone.

We understand that changes can take time to settle in, and we appreciate your patience as we implement these improvements. We remain committed to delivering high-quality care and continuously reviewing our processes to ensure we meet the needs of our patients and community.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
